Times of Central Asia published an article on January 4, discussing President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s interview to the Egemen Qazaqstan newspaper.
“The interview, published on January 2, 2024, included frank discussions on many topics ranging from the government’s “constructive and balanced” foreign policy to its extensive reforms in political, social and economic arenas, while also covering uneasy issues such as the “complex and tense” events of January 2022, which devolved into an attempted violent seizure of power by criminal groups and risked pushing the country into chaos,” reads the article.
The agency writes that the interview “revealed key insights on Kazakhstan’s relations with powerful neighbors Russia and China, as well as the country’s strengthening international role, such as through hosting the International Astana Forum, and the One Water Summit with France in 2024.”

Caspian News reported on December 30 that Russian Gazprom plans to increased its gas deliveries to Central Asia.
“The announcement came from Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, during the company’s final pre-New Year conference,” reads the article.
It cites Miller, who said that mid-term 15-year contracts, negotiated with partners in Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, are scheduled to be formalized at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in the middle of 2024.

She continues to write that the Middle Corridor, a transit link between Europe and China via the Caspian Sea, “has garnered unprecedented interest and prominence.”
The Japan News: Japan Hopes to Boost Central Asian States’ Decarbonization Efforts
The Japan News reported on December 31 that the Japanese government plans to enhance decarbonization-related cooperation with five Central Asian countries through the signing of a memorandum of cooperation. In alignment with this government initiative, Japanese companies will assist the governments and businesses of these five nations in implementing renewable energy and energy-saving technologies.
“Five countries in Central Asia — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan — are rich in natural resources, and neighboring nations China and Russia have been increasing their presence in the area. With Group of Seven countries also keen to boost ties with Central Asia, Japan hopes to differentiate itself from China and Russia through its environmental technologies, an area in which it is an acknowledged leader,” reads the article.

Nurbek discusses how Kazakhstan is reinventing its approach to education, its educational system and the role teachers play in the process.
“We need to really teach our students to adapt, to learn, constantly relearn what they’ve learned so far and unlearn certain things that would limit them from learning new things,” says Nurbek.
Live Science: 1,500-year-old gold buckles depicting ruler ‘majestically sitting on a throne’ discovered in Kazakhstan
Live Science magazine published an article on January 3 about the archeological discovery in Kazakhstan.
“Archaeologists in Kazakhstan have discovered two gold ornaments in a 1,500-year-old tomb that feature the earliest known depictions of the great khan, or ‘khagan,’ of the Göktürks — a nomadic confederation of Turkic-speaking peoples who occupied the region for around three centuries, according to an archaeologist who excavated the site,” reads the article.
The discoveries originate from the Eleke Sazy site, situated close to the eastern boundaries of Kazakhstan with China, Mongolia, and Russian Siberia. Zainolla Samashev and his team have been conducting research at this location since 2016.
