The Indian women’s cricket team advanced to the final of the Women’s Asia Cup T20 2024 after outplaying Bangladesh by 10 wickets in the semi-finals at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Sri Lanka on Friday.
Seven-time Asia Cup winners India will face either Pakistan or Sri Lanka in the final. The Women in Blue will play their ninth Women’s Asia Cup final on Sunday.
The Indian bowling unit, led by Renuka Singh and Radha Yadav, restricted Bangladesh, who opted to bat first, to a paltry score of 80/8 in 20 overs. Both Renuka and Radha picked up three wickets each.
Chasing the small target, Indian openers Smriti Mandhana (55*) and Shafali Verma (26*) led a comfortable run-chase. Both the batters remained unbeaten and shared an 83-run partnership to guide India to the target in 11 overs.
India, the reigning Asian champions, announced their intent early on in the game. Renuka Singh dismissed Dilara Akter (6) in the first over and then accounted for Ishma Tanjim (8) and Murshida Khatun (4) inside the powerplay.
The Indian bowlers restricted the flow of runs as the Bangladesh cricket team continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. The scoreboard went from 17/2 at the start of the third over to 44/6 in 13.3 overs.
There was a brief spell of resistance from Bangladesh women’s cricket captain Nigar Sultana in the middle. She scored 32 in 51 deliveries before losing her wicket to Radha Yadav in the final over.
Radha also dismissed Rumana Ahmed and Nahida Akter as Bangladesh could only manage 80/8 on the scoreboard in 20 overs.
Renuka Singh (3/10) and Radha Yadav (3/14) scalped three wickets. Pooja Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma also registered a dismissal each.
Chasing a small target, India began the run-chase on a strong note with both Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana looking extremely comfortable. Mandhana was the aggressor, scoring an unbeaten 55 in 39 balls with the help of nine boundaries and a six.
Shafali Verma held up one end and scored 26 not out off 28. Her knock included two boundaries.
India have played eight Women’s Asia Cup finals so far. Besides finishing runners-up to Bangladesh in 2018, they have won every other final.
