63 people were killed and around 116 people were injured after landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad, the Kerala Revenue Minister K. Rajan said on Tuesday.
Kerala Minister MB Rajesh said that 250 people have been rescued so far and were shifted to temporary shelters.
However, rescue operations were hampered after a main bridge collapsed in the region. Army engineers were roped in to help build an alternate bridge, the chief minister’s office said in a statement. Rescue has also been made difficult due to no internet connectivity in the area.
Most of the victims were estate workers and their families who were asleep at the time in makeshift tents.
Many people are likely to have been washed away in the Chaliyar river, according to Indian media.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rain in the state on Tuesday.
Relief efforts are ongoing, and two helicopters of the Indian Air Force have been mobilised, the Kerala chief minister’s office said in a statement. An Indian Navy team from the Ezhimala Naval Base in Kannur is also being sent to the district in Kerala to assist in the rescue operations.
In the wake of the landslide, the district level control room has been opened. Those affected may contact two helpline numbers, 8086010833 and 9656938689, for emergency health services, the health minister said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured all possible help from the Centre in the wake of the prevailing situation in the state, in a post on X.
Modi announced Rs200,000 ex-gratia for next of kin of the deceased. He also said that Rs50,000 would be given to the injured, according to a post on X by the Prime Minister’s Office’s handle.
