Nainital: The Lysurus Gardneri, a unique mushroom resembling a chicken’s claw, has been discovered in the pine forests of Chamoli district. Manoj Singh, a research associate from the state forest research wing, collected the specimen during a site visit on Aug 5. The species, previously photographed in China by photographer Michael Kuo in 2013, has not been collected in any region of the world until now, Singh claimed.
“Kuo has expressed his interest in studying the specimen via an email but it would only be sent if the department’s norms allow it,” Singh said. Commenting on the mushroom, Sanjiv Chaturvedi, chief conservator of forests (research), said, “Its ecology is probably saprobic, growing alone or gregariously in a variety of habitats and is found in Asia (Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, and China) and in Africa (South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) year-round.”
NSK Harsh, a mushroom expert and former professor of Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, said, “The discovery of Lysurus Gardneri in Chamoli marks the first time a specimen has been collected from this area, as previously, only photographic evidence of the species existed.” Sonali Mishra
