Nagpur: The quartet of Indian girls picked from the junior national 5×5 basketball championship in Indore are all set to make their 3×3 World Cup debut at the FIBA 3×3 World Cup for Youth boys and girls at Debrecen, Hungary, on Monday.
Led by Pune’s Aanaya Bhavsar, the Indian team includes her Maharashtra state mate Gunjan Mantri, Gunvi Agrawal of Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat’s Aahana George.After a monthlong camp at Chennai the scouts from Basketball Federation of India (BFI) selected the top four cagers for the World Cup.
Seeded 11th as per their rankings in Asia, India has been placed in group C alongside Kyrgyzstan, China, Japan and Uganda. A total of 20 teams divided in four groups will fight it out for the coveted title. Top two teams from each pool will qualify for the quarterfinals.
In their tournament opener, India will face the challenge of Japan late on Monday night while they face mighty China in their second league game. On Wednesday, India will face the challenge of China.
As per the individual rankings, both Gunjan and Aahana have some points in their kitty while Aanaya and Gunvi are yet to open their accounts.
For the first time in the 88-year history of Indian basketball, India’s U-18 boys team made their debut in the World Cup while the girls’ team failed to make their cut. After qualifying for the Level 1 of top teams in Asia, the U-18 girls team sealed their place for the World Cup.
Despite being newcomers at the world stage, president of BFI Aadhav Arjuna is hopeful of Indian girls’ better performance in Hungary.
