Russia hosts economic forum
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is set to attend the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected at the event which aims to boost investment in the country’s far east.
Pope in Asia
Pope Francis is set to arrive in Jakarta, Indonesia for the first leg of a Southeast Asia tour. Apart from greeting local Catholic communities, he is slated to visit the city’s Istiqlal Mosque and meet President Joko Widodo, who said they will discuss peace efforts in Gaza and Ukraine. After Indonesia, the pontiff visits Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore.
Hong Kong war museum opens
Hong Kong inaugurates its new Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence, part of the government’s intensifying drive to instill greater patriotism in the population. The existing Coastal Defence museum has been undergoing a revamp to emphasize exhibits focused on resistance to Japanese forces during World War II. The city’s government has been pushing pro-Beijing “patriotic education” in recent years, amid a clampdown on free expression under national security legislation. After an unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, the museum will open to the public on Wednesday.

China-Africa Forum
Chinese President Xi Jinping plays host to the country’s largest diplomatic event as the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation kicks off in Beijing. Held once every three years and located alternately in either China or an African nation, the forum is expected to announce new actions aimed at achieving practical cooperation. Leaders from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Senegal and South Africa are expected to attend. The forum is made up of 53 countries and was established in 2000 with a secretariat in Beijing.
Taiwan chip talks
Semicon Taiwan, one of the most important chip industry events of the year, kicks off in Taipei. The three-day event will bring together business leaders, researchers and analysts under the theme “Breaking Limits: Powering the AI Era.” Highlights include scheduled appearances by executives from TSMC, ASE Group, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and many others.

Japan and Australia hold 2-plus-2 meeting
Japan and Australia hold a 2-plus-2 defense and foreign ministers meeting in Australia, amid growing concern over China’s military expansion in the Indo-Pacific. Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Defense Minister Minoru Kihara will meet with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Defense Minister Richard Marles in the first 2-plus-2 meeting since late 2022 in Tokyo.
