According to the poll body’s announcement on Monday, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina secures a fourth consecutive term with her party winning an absolute majority in the general election.
The main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), boycotted the elections due to Hasina’s refusal to resign and allow a neutral authority to oversee the general election.
Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, first became prime minister in 1996, marking her fifth term in office, as reported by Reuters.
During her previous 15 years in power, Hasina is credited with revitalizing the economy and the significant garments industry. She has also received international recognition for providing shelter to Rohingya Muslims escaping persecution in Myanmar.
The recent general election in Bangladesh saw a low turnout as violence marred the polling process.
Chief election commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal reported that the voter turnout was approximately 40% when polls closed, significantly lower than the over 80% turnout in the previous election held in 2018.
The low voter turnout may be attributed to the boycott by the main opposition party, the BNP, and concerns over the electoral process’s fairness.
Sheikh Hasina’s victory paves the way for her to continue her leadership in Bangladesh, but questions surrounding the election’s legitimacy and inclusiveness remain.
