Cold Front Technologies Asia, a Philippines-based refrigeration and air-conditioning contractor and distributor, has joined the world’s leading natural refrigerant HVAC&R stakeholders as a silver partner of the NaturalRefrigerants.com marketplace.
Cold Front Technologies was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Manila with offices in Cebu and Bulacan. The company has extensive experience with natural refrigerants, specifically CO2 (R744) and propane (R290). Its OEM partners include Freor, Arneg and Nihon Netsugen Systems (NNS).
Emilio Gonzalez La’O, President of Cold Front Technologies, said during a presentation at the ATMOsphere APAC Summit 2024 that his company is dedicated to driving the country’s transition to natural refrigerants, especially in its fast-growing cold chain. The ATMOsphere APAC Summit was held in Tokyo February 6–7 by ATMOsphere, the publisher of NaturalRefrigerants.com.
“Our philosophy as a company is to leapfrog from these systems to natural refrigerants,” said La’O. “We see great potential in natural refrigerants in the Philippines with the backing of the public and private sectors and the availability of the technology and training provided by our government.”
NatRef firsts
Cold Front Technologies was the contractor behind the Philippines first CO2 cold storage facility, which opened in October 2023 in Roxas City. The 500-pallet facility, which is kept at -22°C (−7.6°F), is fitted with a 34kW (9.7TR) condensing unit from Japanese OEM NNS and a gas cooler and two 18kW (5.1TR) evaporators from German OEM Güntner. Both companies have received the ATMO Approved Natural Refrigerants Label from ATMOsphere for 2024. ATMOsphere is the publisher of NaturalRefrigerants.com.
Cold Front Technologies also installed the country’s first CO2-based blast freezer in Pasig City this past June. The blast freezer, installed at a food processing facility’s cold room, features a 25kW (7.1TR)-capacity CO2 Super Green unit from NNS as well as an outdoor gas cooler and evaporator from Güntner. The cold room measures 28m3 (988.8ft3) and was previously served by an ammonia (R717)-based refrigeration system.
In 2016, Cold Front installed the first water-loop system in the Philippines at a Citimart supermarket in Batangas to serve its R290 plug-in cases. The company has installed at least four more water-loop systems since, including at supermarkets in Japan and Cambodia.
In February of this year, it also installed the country’s first R290-based refrigeration units. The self-contained walk-in refrigerator and freezer were installed at the Good Food Farm in Magdalena and manufactured by Embraco, a brand of Nidec Global Appliance. The refrigerator measures 11.5m3 (406ft3) and is kept at −5 to 5°C (23 to 41°F), while the freezer measures 7.7m3 (271.9ft3) and keeps food frozen at −25 to −10°C (−13 to 14°F).
The CCI-Hub
Cold Front Technologies was a partner of the Cold Chain Innovation-Hub (CCI-Hub), an initiative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Philippines’ Department of Environment and Natural Resources to accelerate the development of the country’s low-carbon cold chain. ATMOsphere was also a CCI-Hub partner.
The CCI-Hub launched 10 sustainable refrigeration pilots focused on CO2 and R290, including the aforementioned R744 cold storage facility and blast freezer and the self-contained R290 walk-in freezer and refrigerator.
The CCI-Hub was part of UNIDO’s Global Partnership for Improving the Food Cold Chain in the Philippines (FCC) project, which ran from 2019 until June 2024. The CCI-Hub will continue to operate under the management of the Filipino government’s Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
