Japan has always been a well-loved travel destination for Malaysians, owing to its temperate weather, great food, and fascinating culture. However from 1st October onwards, Malaysian citizens will soon join a list of 71 other countries who will require prior authorisation to visit the Land of The Rising Sun.
Currently, citizens of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, Britain, the United States, Australia, and other countries can visit Japan visa-free. According to reports, citizens of 71 countries, including Malaysia, must furnish personal details before entering Japan for government records. This new measure aims to streamline tourist arrivals in Japan and address concerns about illegal immigration.

According to a report by The Star, Japan witnessed a footfall of around 22,000 visitors from Malaysia between January and June, based on data shared by Japan-based JTB Tourism Research and Consulting Co.
With Japan battling overtourism as a result of a massive tourist influx between January and June this year (over 17.7 million visitors), it is imperative to keep a tab on tourist movement.
According to the new rules, all visa-exempt foreign nationals will have to reveal their purpose of visit and share details related to their accommodation for screening by the country’s Immigration Services Agency before commencing their travel. The authorisation application will be reviewed for potential risks, and those deemed “illegal-stay risks” may be denied entry.
Japan’s new system is modelled after the US Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA). This strategic move is poised to streamline tourist influx and tackle illegal immigration to Japan by visitors from visa-exempt nations who tend to stay beyond the stipulated time of 14 to 90 days from arrival.
If you’re planning a trip to Japan, ensure you apply for authorisation well in advance to avoid delays.
