Paul Clark, Managing Director, Terrapinn Asia Pte Ltd
Can you discuss the transition from “The Future Energy Show Vietnam & The Solar Show Vietnam” to “Solar & Storage Live Vietnam 2024” and its significance for the forum?
Fundamentally, it’s borne out of the fact that solar is targeted to be a hugely significant energy source for Vietnam – by 2050, when Vietnam aims to have decarbonised its economy, solar will be the dominant energy source. This marks a huge change from 2010, when Vietnam was ranked 196th in the world for solar power generation. By 2021, it was ranked 9th and it’s not stopping there – so it’s a huge opportunity!
As with all countries pushing for a cleaner energy mix, there are challenges, but there’s enormous opportunities there, particularly with the enormous reduction in the cost of solar panels in recent years and increasingly encouraging recent signs of energy storage system prices coming down.
There have been some seriously encouraging signs from Vietnam’s recent Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8 for short), such as the new announcement that there will be no regional restrictions on the development of self-produced, self-consumed rooftop solar energy – this could be a real gamechanger for commercial & industrial projects whereby large energy users are looking to significantly decrease their energy costs.
By moving to Solar & Storage Live, we’re putting the focus on where we can help make the most difference as Vietnam transitions to a low-carbon future.
2. How does Solar & Storage Live Vietnam 2024 plan to honor leading technologies and practical experiences in transitioning to a greener and smarter energy system for Vietnam?
That’s a hard question. We’re really focusing on the successes in clean power generation so far and the enormous potential that solar & storage technologies have to be a game-changer in taking Vietnam forward to a low-carbon or no-carbon future. That said, this isn’t an overnight game – there’s at least 25 more years where at least some of Vietnam’s energy needs will be met by more ‘traditional’ fuels. We want to help Vietnam chart a new path forward in achieving its energy goals – learning from the past but not dwelling on it.
So how are we going to do that? We’ve got a packed exhibition floor lined up for our attendees where solar panel providers, inverter players, energy storage technology leaders, mounting and racking providers and much more will be showcasing their wares for them to get hands on with. It’s a real marketplace where people come to shop for solutions. All of the exhibitors will be ready to share real-life examples of their technology or components in action and to demonstrate their capabilities. Alongside that, we’ve got two jam-packed content theatres covering a wide range of areas including C&I solar, smart energy, energy storage and of course our returning Solar Installer University where attendees can tackle some of the installation challenges head on. It’s going to be a busy and fun two days!
3. What role does Terrapinn play in facilitating discussions among leading experts and businesses on the challenges and opportunities in developing renewable energy for Vietnam?
Our strength is in getting the right people in the right room (or expo hall!) at the right time to “spark something”, which is our motto. We’re creating a forum where our attendees can form new relationships, whether it’s a project developer looking for funding, a factory owner looking to reduce their energy costs, an aspiring installer looking to learn more about how they can access this growing industry or a PV panel player looking for their next big local distributor. It’s about that serendipity and creating a space for our attendees to find that next key contact, be that on the exhibition floor or in one of our conference theatres.
4. How does the company ensure that its events remain relevant and impactful for attendees, considering the evolving needs of the renewable energy industry?
Well we’ve got a more than 30-year heritage of doing this so we’re pretty good at identifying trends. But more than that, it’s also about our relationships. We work with real industry leaders and are well-connected, plus we read all the time to make sure we’re keeping our fingers on the pulse of what’s happening.
Take Solar & Storage Live Vietnam, for example. It started out as something quite different – a small event of just a few hundred people back in 2017 – and has now grown into Vietnam’s largest clean energy event. As excitement has grown about this market, so too has the event. Now it’s much less about the theory of what Vietnam’s solar potential could be and much more about how we can help Vietnam achieve its ambitious and admirable energy goals in the next few decades.
5. What are your expectations for the future of Terrapinn, and how do you envision its contribution to sustainable energy solutions globally?
Frankly, I couldn’t be more excited for where we’re at right now with our Solar & Storage Live events. In Asia, besides Solar & Storage Live Vietnam and Solar & Storage Live Philippines (which incidentally just last week won an AEO Excellence Award for Best International Show – Asia Pacific), we’re also bringing the event to Thailand in November, the first clean energy event to be focused on Thailand alone, to Malaysia in April next year and we’ve also got another edition launching in late 2025, which we’ll be announcing in the coming weeks. Globally, we’re running 21 editions of Solar & Storage Live in 2025, so the future is bright!
All of us that work on the Solar & Storage Live events across the world are passionate about helping our attendees create a low carbon future for all. For my team and I, who run the Asian editions and are based in Asia, we’re seeing first-hand how these events can help catalyse change and unite attendees behind a common mission of bringing clean, affordable and reliable energy to all – that’s a pretty inspiring place to be.
