(Nikkei Asia) — Japan hopes to speed the country’s development of nuclear fusion technology, catching up with target time frames put forward by other countries for testing the power source envisioned as crucial for decarbonization.
Nuclear fusion involves the same reactions that occur inside the sun. An enormous amount of energy is released when the nuclei of atoms combine. In theory, 1 gram of fuel harnessed from this process could yield energy equivalent to about 8 tons of oil, without emitting carbon dioxide.
